Install before you fly
Once you land there is no connection to install with. Install it while you still have Wi-Fi before you leave, and turn it on after you arrive.
The easiest way
On iOS 17.4 or later, the 'One-tap install for iPhone' button on your order page is all it takes (the button in our email opens that page). Otherwise, follow the steps below.
Before you fly — install
- 1
Settings → Cellular
Open the Settings app and tap 'Cellular' ('Mobile Data' on some devices).
- 2
Add eSIM
Tap 'Add eSIM'. On some iOS versions it says 'Set Up Cellular' or 'Add Cellular Plan'.
- 3
Use QR Code
Choose 'Use QR Code'.
- 4
Scan the QR
Point the camera at the QR code shown on another screen, such as a computer or another phone. Only have this iPhone? On iOS 17.4 or later, open your order page, tap and hold the QR code, then tap 'Add eSIM'. You can also tap 'Enter Details Manually' at the bottom of the screen and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your order page.
- 5
Name the line
Follow the prompts on screen. When asked for a label, pick something like 'Travel' so you don't mix it up later. Leave calls and texts on your existing SIM.
After you land — turn on data
- 1
Switch your data line
Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and pick the travel line.
- 2
Turn on roaming
Turn on Data Roaming for the travel line. Leave roaming off on your home line.
If it doesn't work, start here
- Install fails — check that you are connected to Wi-Fi. A QR code installs only once.
- No internet — check that the travel eSIM is selected as your data line and that roaming is on for that line.
- Still nothing — restart the phone. That fixes most cases.
